But the retail giant backpedaled this week, saying higher prices on many grocery items and household staples like paper goods have stuck. Food prices climbed 2.6%, fueled by a 5.1% jump in prices for food away from home, a category that includes restaurant meals and vending machine purchases. That gives their makers the ability to keep raising prices to mitigate higher costs, even as their volume drops. Even some of the biggest U.S. brands have signaled that consumers' tolerance of higher prices has worn thin.

As the federal funds rate rises, the prime rate does, as well, and credit card rates follow suit. Meta's latest social networking app, Threads , is expected to go live Thursday, according to Apple's App Store. Twitter users have responded angrily to Musk's latest restrictions on the platform, and many appear to be looking for new alternatives — potentially making Zuckerberg's Threads an attractive option for disgruntled Twitter users. Bottom line We couldn't think of any company other than Meta Platforms, under the leadership of Zuckerberg, to take on Twitter. But while TikTok has been the one in the spotlight, other Chinese apps that present similar issues are also experiencing massive popularity in the U.S. Gorman said as the U.S. considers the threat posed by TikTok, it will also need to develop a framework for how to evaluate the relative risk of Chinese apps. But in the meantime, U.S. consumers continue to turn to Chinese apps. "And then of course, there's the early growth of Lemon8, which suggests that the appetite for Chinese apps in the U.S. is still growing." And some say the most effective long-term solution for curbing the use of Chinese apps may be fostering an environment for robust alternatives to grow.
